After our trip to Lake Tekapo ( where the Church Of The Good Shepherd is), we drove for 4 hr 22 min from Lake Tekapo to Hanmer Springs (a thermal resort town near to Christchurch).
We skipped Christchurch for this time simply because we have visited a few times before and the town is still under restoration from the major earthquake. To make the long 4 hours journey shorter, we visited Pegasus Bay Winery at Waipara wine region – which is about 50 minutes drive from Christchurch.
In case you missed my previous post, our New Zealand trip started from Queenstown (South Island) and drove our way up north:
- Cromwell (Central Otago Wine Region)
- Mount Cook/ Aoraki National Park
- Lake Tekapo
- Hanmer Springs (Near Christchurch) —-> what this current post is about!
- Blenheim (Marlborough Wine Region)
- Martinborough (wine region)
- Napier (Hawkes Bay wine region)
- Lake Taupo (Volcanic lake town)
- Bay of Island
So, Where Did We Stayed In Hanmer Springs?
What To Do in Hanmer Springs
Conical Hill Walkway (Easy hike 1 hour return)
Cars can be parked nearby, just grab a light jacket and we are good to go.
Hanmer Springs is essentially a hot pool relaxation town. If this is your first time there, be sure to spend a relaxing day in the thermal pool. Adult single ticket $25 NZD, ticket price you can see it here.
The water in this thermal pools starts as snow and rain falling on the Hanmer Springs mountains almost 180 years ago. It seeps into the Greywacke basement rock and comes to rest in a reservoir some two kilometres underground, where it is warmed by heat radiating from the earth’s core. To put it simply, they are ancient water that’s good for you.
Food in Hanmer Springs
You can always find fish and chips and ice cream shop in every town in New Zealand, no matter big or small town. Hanmer Springs considered a small town, we found this small fish and chips stall near the main square. Delicious.
A typical New Zealand fish and chips, can’t be completed without lemonade “L&P” (stands for Lemon & Paeroa – world famous New Zealand soft drinks)! 1 portion of fish and chips + L&P drinks = $10.5 NZD. This is considered a cheap eat compared to a Phad Thai at a local bistro for $20.
Sunset at Hanmer Springs
Oh, not to mention the beautiful sunset at Hanmer Springs.
Next destination: Nelson
Another relatively long drive (3 hr 30 minutes) drive up north to Nelson.
Many scenic lookout along the way. For example this one – just a pittstop beside the highway, how refreshing! @ Marui Falls
Hope you enjoy this post, stay tuned for Nelson next.
